How to set up a health clinic

Warning: Before getting to know this business, it is worth mentioning that the following topics are not part of a Business Plan but rather the profile of the environment in which the entrepreneur will envisage a business opportunity as described below. The purpose of all of the following topics is to demystify and give an overview of how a business positions itself in the market. What are the variables that most affect this type of business? How do these market variables behave? How do you get the information you need to take the initiative?

According to the Federal Constitution of 1988, it is the duty of the State to guarantee health for the entire population. Therefore, in 1990, the Government created the Unified Health System (SUS), governed by Law 8.080. The Law states that SUS is composed of federal, state and municipal public organs and institutions of the Direct and Indirect Administration and of foundations maintained by the Public Power and that the private initiative may participate in the Unified Health System (SUS), in a complementary manner. However, the law also states that health care services are free to the private sector, provided that ethical principles and norms issued by the SUS management body are observed, which authorize and control private health care services, characterized by Acting, on its own initiative, of legally qualified liberal professionals and legal entities of private law in the promotion, protection and recovery of health.

This opens up space for entrepreneurship in health services, through health clinics in their various specialties. The clinics can be establishments with hospitalization, without hospitalization or of support to the diagnosis and therapy. The private sector predominates in establishments with hospitalization and in support of diagnosis and therapy.

The clinics work in the most diverse activities. In relation to small enterprises, specialization is notable, that is, care in only one or some related areas of medicine. It is a fertile field for newly trained professionals who, despite understanding health as the state's responsibility, do not want to spend their entire career as public servants with reduced growth prospects. In the same way, the most recognized professionals in their specialties, achieve better income when working as entrepreneurs in their own clinics.

The prospects are not modest for a business in the field of health clinics, because it is a commodity of first necessity, with extremely closed niches, opening opportunities for those who can add value and differentiate by specialty. Depending on the specialty you can get a unique place in the market, but there is also the risk of strong competition, as in the example of dental offices.

The income comes directly from families, final consumers of health services, or through agreements with health insurance plans and insurers.
